The women faced a dark reality – the knowledge that for the rest of their lives, people would use the crime scene footage of their abuse for both pleasure and profit. In 2019, a Maryland appellate court found 6-1 that child pornography laws apply when a teen is both the subject and sender of sexually explicit media. Under the ruling, where the judicial panel encouraged lawmakers to change the law, the appellate court upheld a lower court’s decision where a 16-year-old girl was convicted as her own pornographer. How could millennial women, living in an age where porn is almost exclusively viewed online, ever believe their own videos would never be posted on the Internet?

That case resulted in a $13 million verdict against the men earlier this month. I started the Justice Defense Fund in an effort to assist victims in their pursuit of healing and justice. One is public pressure initiatives where we’re trying to shine a light on injustice, specifically on corporate bad actors, like Pornhub, who are involved in the distribution of illegal and criminal content. We’re still waiting for criminal prosecution, not only for the company, but for its individual owners. There’s 26 lawsuits currently, on behalf of victims across the U.S., Canada and the U.K., multiple class-action lawsuits on behalf of tens of thousands of child victims, and so we’re in this process of trying to fight for justice and accountability. What kind of blew this all up was the realization that alongside pretend videos of children being raped were real videos of children being raped, and many times you couldn’t tell the difference, because they’re not verifying age and consent.
